Former Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is opening up about the diet and lifestyle changes that led him to drop more than 30 pounds last year.
In a new interview with People published over the weekend, the 48-year-old explained that he’s cut back on his red meat intake by more than 75 percent.
“The biggest thing I’ve done for my diet is I used to eat meat like steak probably eight out of 10 days, and now I’ve cut it to one or two days out of 10,” Rodriguez told the publication. But other than changes to his diet, he attributes adhering to the same exercise routine that he’s been following the past couple years, which has him “getting to the gym six or seven days a week, just to break a sweat every day—nothing too crazy.”
“I try to mix in a little yoga here and there, and some meditation, and then I incorporate a 40-minute walk before I go to bed,” he added. “That’s also been very helpful.”
Rodriguez previously opened up about his 32-pound weight loss on The Jennifer Hudson Show back in October, and admitted that—like many people—he had put on weight during the initial lockdown phase of the pandemic due to stress.

“I’m a very social person. I like people. I love people,” he explained at the time. “And I was so stressed between being in [Los Angeles] and Miami, being the CEO of two companies, and lost my way a little bit and started gaining some weight, wasn’t focusing on my health as much.”
“And my girlfriend Jaclyn said, ‘You’ve got to get yourself in better shape,'” Rodriguez continued. “And I just changed my routine. Now, I get up in the morning and I don’t look at my phone until noon. So from the time I wake up, I’m in the gym at 8, work out for a couple of hours, come home, do a little sauna, a little steam, stretch, meditate, and then I’m at my desk every day from 12 to 6.”
In addition to the myriad of health benefits from eating less red meat, a diet high in iron has actually been found to make you overall hungrier—if that’s another reason to stick to a predominately plant-based diet.
